The 5 biggest mistakes made when implementing Odoo ERP

Introduction

The decision to move to a new ERP system is one of the biggest decisions in a company.

After all, you don't change the system once a month, but expect it to last for many years.

It's not another building block in a network of other applications, but a completely new approach in which everything possible will be replaced with solutions in a given ERP system.

Implementation time is insanely important for any company - what can go wrong in an implementation?

Based on our implementations, we have identified five reasons why deploying Odoo ERP can be quite challenging.

I invite you to read on🙂

Mistake 1

Misunderstanding the role of the ERP system

Consider why you want to implement an ERP system at your company.

What benefits will it bring you?

One of the biggest advantages of Odoo is that it allows you to replace many other applications you use and have everything in one system.

Don't think of Odoo as just another block in your application network, think of it as a system that will help you get out of the complexity of processes, unnecessary duplication of data in different systems and unnecessary integrations between systems.

By implementing Odoo, you are embarking on an adventure in which existing connections between apps will be replaced by a single system.

This requires commitment on your part.

If this is lacking then Odoo will be just another building block in a web of application usage.

On the other hand, think of the tremendous value you will get from replacing yet another application with a ready-made solution in Odoo.

So don’t be among those who cling to outdated solutions. After implementing Odoo, some hesitate to turn off old systems just because a tiny part of the process is still used there occasionally. But maintaining integrations and extra systems will drain your resources over time. Be bold—turn off what you can. Have a clear plan and a deadline for shutting down the old systems.

Mistake 2

Lack of critical thinking

Once you decide to implement Odoo it becomes more than just an ERP system.

IT WILL BE YOUR SOURCE OF INFORMATION!

That's why it's a valuable idea to be critical of the processes I want to transfer to Odoo from the very beginning of the implementation.

Why does this process look this way?

What value does it bring to our company?

Is it just our habit or do we really need it?

By thinking critically throughout the implementation process, you are assured of getting something organized and schldug at the end. When a new employee is hired to your company you will be proud to roll it out, knowing that everything is where it should be

Mistake 3

Lack of a long-term vision

You probably have a defined direction for your company in the next 5-10 years.

However, in order for this vision to become a reality, the tools you use must also be developed as well.

Often we think we need something for the here and now.

Let's zoom out the perspective:

Will I need it the same again in 10 days?

A month from now?

A year from now?

In 10 years?

Honest answers to these questions can act as filters for short-sighted functionalities that have been developed under the influence of an implosion. With this approach, you will avoid building a huge Odoo system with many functionalities that nobody uses after time

Mistake 4

Hiring a programmer who solves company problems only through coding

These issues can often be resolved by following Odoo's ready solutions and providing proper training for employees.

Without this, a programmer may spend years developing modules and modifying Odoo's internal structures without truly understanding the functional aspects of its modules.

Over time, the system becomes so bloated that fixing one issue creates two more.

Eventually, migration becomes impractical, making a full reimplementation the only viable option.

Mistake 5

Wrong accounting setup

If I could bet on one application where a good setup from the beginning is very important - it would be accounting.

If you're not sure about what you're doing in accounting, it's better not to do it.

Unscrewing the accounting aspects can be time-consuming and challenging
